Escaping Syria: From Homs to a new home

As the plane filled with Syrian refugees began its descent into Toronto, the first glimpse of the city’s skyline below proved too much for the al-Daher family. “We all started crying,” said Salwa al-Daher as she, her husband, Hussain, and their four kids contemplated a new life in Canada, a world away from the bloodshed of their war-torn homeland and far from the despair of living as refugees in Jordan. “We were happy that we would not hear any bombs and gunfire again,” she said.
